School Nutrition
Welcome to BPS School Nutrition Department
Billerica Public School Families,
While the start of the school year looks a little different for everyone, I wanted to share with you some good news that schools nationwide received recently. The USDA extended a waiver that allows schools to serve FREE breakfast and lunch to ALL KIDS, through June 30, 2023. We are thrilled with this news as it means that we will be able to provide all Billerica Public Schools students with nutritious and nourishing food for free that will support them, both in school and at home.
What this means for your family and for Billerica Public Schools:
This USDA waiver allows Billerica Schools Nutrition Services to provide the most nourishing and appetizing meals possible for your children. When your children eat school meals, it helps our schools by providing federal funds to the district. The more meals we serve, the more funding we receive, allowing us to focus on meal quality, variety and innovative practices (new recipes, frozen take home meals, etc.). If your children have never before participated in school meals, consider trying the program this year!
All Kids, ages 0-21, will receive a healthy breakfast and lunch every school day, at no cost, in a safe and welcoming environment. This applies to all students attending classes in school or virtual classes at home, or a hybrid combination of these models and to kids not currently in school. ALL students will have the opportunity to select one FREE breakfast and one FREE lunch when physically in school until June 30, 2022. FREE meals save families time and money. By allowing us to prepare meals for your children you don’t have to plan or shop for your children’s breakfast and lunch each school day. All families should take advantage of this program, regardless of household income or eligibility.
INFORMATION - LINKS
At Billerica Public Schools we know that good nutrition AND learning go hand in hand.
The Billerica Schools Nutrition Services program provides students with wholesome, nutritious and delicious meals that meet the USDA dietary guidelines for all Americans. Breakfast, lunch and healthy snacks are offered in each café. Menus are emailed home monthly and posted online along with nutritional and other valuable information. Students are offered 5 components at lunch: grains, meat or a meat alternate (protein), fruits, vegetables and milk. As required by the USDA, students must take at least 3 components as part of their lunch and one of those components must be a fruit or vegetable. Students are encouraged to take all 5 components. (For breakfast, students must take 3 food items.)
